Another day, another Marvel rumor. But based on everything that’s been announced lately, this one has a very good chance of becoming a reality. The Punisher is back and Jon Bernthal will play him, with a new project to be announced at D23. Rumors, courtesy of Twitter user Marvel Updates, claim that Bernthal will not only reprise his role as Frank Castle for Disney+, but that the series will also be rated TV-MA. That is an adult rating.
Although this information has not been confirmed, given that we already know that Charlie Cox’s Daredevil will get its own series, and the first two seasons of The Punisher are now streaming on Disney+, it makes sense that Jon Bernthal’s The Punisher could be called back to fight soon. Both the Netflix series Daredevil and The Punisher were hugely popular with fans who have been patiently waiting for their return and incorporation into the MCU ever since.
Of course, this isn’t the first time that The Punisher’s return rumors have circulated, with one claim that the hero would star in his own movie, another that Frank Castle would appear in a Hulu series. However, the idea of Charlie Cox returning to the role of Matt Murdock, aka Daredevil, seemed far-fetched until we saw him show up to help Peter Parker out of a legal mess in Spider-Man: No Way Home.
Frank Castle, played by Jon Bernthal, was first introduced in the second season of Daredevil and went on his own adventure in 2017’s The Punisher. The series follows Castle as he continues his brutal vendetta as a vigilante using deadly crime-fighting methods. The series, like the rest of the Netflix/Marvel series, was canceled after two seasons in 2019.
Bernthal himself said that he would not mind playing the role of the Punisher again, but only on the condition that everything remains gloomy and harsh.
Fans of The Punisher won’t have to wait long to find out if there’s anything in these rumors: D23 Expo 2022 will take place September 9-11, 2022 at the Anaheim, California Convention Center.
