The Dark Pictures Anthology: The Devil in Me is a new horror adventure from Supermassive Games that will let us go in search of good fear. The team revealed the inspirations for the new game and pointed out that the Saw film series was one of the most important.
However, let’s remember that The Dark Pictures: The Devil in Me anthology is not just inspired by the film, but is based on real events. The plot centers on a modern reproduction of the “Castle of Death”, the infamous H.H. Holmes. The latter is widely considered to be the first true serial killer in American history.
Holmes renovated the hotel he owned and installed a whole series of false walls, peepholes, torture chambers and even an oven in the basement. Before his execution, Holmes claimed to have killed 27 people, although he was convicted in court of only one murder. During the trial, Holmes famously said:
I was born with the devil in my soul. I could not help but kill, just as a poet cannot be silent when inspired…
The name The Devil in Me comes from this quote by Holmes.
The features of the Saw series and Holmes’ Castle of Death combine perfectly to make a horror slasher.
