The Prince of Persia series will return to the industry in 2024. The last game in the series came out in 2010, and Ubisoft hasn’t looked back at it since. With a new game coming out in 2024 and a remake already announced, fans are also hoping for a new AAA game in the series. To everyone’s disappointment, this may not happen in the near future.
In a recent interview, Prince of Persia creator Jordan Mechner spoke about the current state of the Prince of Persia franchise.
Discussing the recently announced 2D game, Jordan Mechner stated that it was the right choice for the series. He credits the existence of Assassin’s Creed as one of the reasons for this justification, saying:
2D is great for the series right now, and one of the reasons is Assassin’s Creed Mirage. Ubisoft showed these games at the same presentation, they are set in Persia – in general, the new Prince of Persia would not have a chance if they made it as an AAA project
Jordan Mechner went on to confirm that Ubisoft has been trying to make a AAA Prince of Persia game for the past few years. However, none of these attempts were successful and were cancelled.
According to the creator, the series cannot coexist with Assassin’s Creed, since the latter has effectively forced the franchise out of the gaming industry.
Assassin’s Creed has been a great success since its inception. It has sold over 200 million copies, becoming Ubisoft’s most successful game to date. It also means that the gaming giant is fully focused on the series, with 11 games planned for the future.
While the creator is pleased with the 2D gameplay, The Lost Crown has been less favorably received by fans on Youtube. After the presentation of the game on Youtube, it received a lot of negative reviews. According to Mechner, all that wave of criticism is proof that the series is still interesting for players.
