Overwatch League esports under threat of closure due to low revenues

Breaking news for esports fans: Activision Blizzard is offering Overwatch League team owners $6 million each if they don’t want to renew their contract for next season.

The company’s new financial report says Overwatch’s esports league continues to struggle and generates less than 1% of Activision Blizzard’s total operating revenue. After the end of the 2023 season, the team owners will vote on the conclusion of contracts on new terms. In this case, the owners can refuse and receive a compensation package in the amount of $6 million. The question is how many organizations decide to leave the game in this way and how many League teams will end up left.

Recall that this year the Overwatch League has already left one of the four Chinese teams – Chengdu Hunters – due to the financial problems of their owner. Experts suggest that the latest news could be the beginning of the end for the Overwatch esports league.
