If you haven’t updated your Nvidia graphics driver to the latest version yet, it’s best to wait: Nvidia has confirmed that there is a bug in the driver that causes crashes in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. And not only with it, according to messages on the Steam forum
This issue has been reported by Beenox, the lead studio behind Modern Warfare 2 PC.
“We noticed some stability issues with the latest NVIDIA 526.47 drivers in Call of Duty #MWII,” the studio tweeted. “For now, we advise you to use the 516.59 or 522.25 drivers.”
Nvidia later confirmed the problem in an email sent to PC Gamer.
Yes, there is a bug reported for this game and we are working on a fix. This is why our latest Game Ready driver was not recommended for this game.
Oddly enough, several people who have posted about the issues on Reddit claim that they have updated the drivers to the latest version to fix the crashing issue. For example, one user describes that after a crash, Steam requires a long download before allowing the game to be launched again (even though it doesn’t actually download anything). Updating graphics drivers is a standard first step in troubleshooting, but in this case, it seems to only make the problem worse.
Nvidia hasn’t said when a fix will be available, but the current Game Ready Driver is still listed as 526.47 – broken, so for now it’s best to just stick with what you have, even if it’s a little weird. If you have already upgraded and want to roll back, you can find instructions on how to do this. here.
