Nicolas Cage to play alcoholic dragon in new Paramount+ series

Deadline has announced a new Paramount+ streaming service project, Highfire, a fantasy series starring Oscar winner Nicolas Cage. Cage will voice the dragon with a love for vodka.

The project is based on the book of the same name by Eoin Colfer. Once dragons ruled the Earth, now the remnants of life live out in the Louisiana swamp. Lord Highfire was one such ruler, and nowadays drowns his wealth with vodka and loves to watch the movie Flashdance. Everything changes after meeting a teenager Squib, who is accused of smuggling alcohol to the local mafia.

Davey Holmes (Shameless) will serve as showrunner and creator of the series. Deadline describes the series as “True Detective mixed with Pete and His Dragon”. Production will be handled by MGM.

“Highfire” will mark Cage’s first major television project since leaving Joe Exotic. The actor recently appeared in the meta-comedy The Unbearable Weight of Great Talent. Next year, with his participation, the film “Renfield” will be released, where he will embody Count Dracula.
