Netflix cancels release of ‘Masters of the Universe’

The streaming service Netflix has decided to abandon the production of the fantasy “Masters of the Universe” (Masters of the Universe) based on the Mattel toys of the same name and the 1980s animated series.

The news was reported exclusively by Variety. The reasons for this decision, sources indicate the fall in Netflix shares last spring and the estimated budget of the picture (more than $150 million). Before canceling the project, Netflix had already spent about $30 million to develop it. Brothers Adam and Aaron Nee (The Lost City) were supposed to direct, and Kyle Allen (West Side Story) could play the title role.

The animated “Lords” were released from 1983 to 1985. The plot told about the superhero He-Man and his team of assistants – the heroes confront the insidious Skeleton, who wants to capture their planet Eternia. Also widely known feature film in 1987 with Dolph Lundgren.
