According to a report by Barron’s, the game exceeded $600 million in opening weekend sales. If so, it would mean some change in the series’ fortunes after the last main installment, 2021’s Call of Duty Vanguard, was both a critical and commercial disappointment. Last year, there were reports that Vanguard’s UK sales start was the lowest of any game in the series in the modern era.
The release of this year’s game, which returned to a modern military theme after Vanguard’s World War II theme, may indicate that Call of Duty fans are more interested in games set in the modern era.
The game’s success is also likely due to its name, as 2009’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (2009) is considered one of the best in the series and was released at the height of Call of Duty’s popularity in the late 2000s.
While the new Modern Warfare 2 has certainly proved popular since its release, it hasn’t been without its problems. Due to a bug that allowed players to track enemies through walls for the duration of a match, the ping system was temporarily disabled. Infinity Ward has also disabled the ability to customize some consoles while it investigates why the system was causing the game to crash. The hotel in Amsterdam also criticized the extremely realistic depiction of the Dutch city in the game, stating that the hotel’s inclusion was “undesirable”.
