James Gunn reveals which role in Guardians of the Galaxy 3 was originally going to be Stan Lee’s cameo
“I originally wrote the Lambshank character, which I had to play, for Stan Lee because I wrote the movie before Stan passed away,” Gunn explains in a director’s commentary (via The Direct), speaking of one of Supreme’s genetic experiments. Evolutionary.
And I knew that he also aged a lot and it would be difficult to bring him to Atlanta for filming, so I made a character that I could just animate and then ask him to voice and give this character a bit like a Stan Lee face. But unfortunately, Stan, who I really enjoyed working with and directing so many times in these films, passed away.
The late Marvel Comics boss has appeared in every MCU project from 2008’s Iron Man to Avengers: Endgame. Lee passed away in November 2018 at the age of 95, but the first draft of Guardians 3 was completed back in June 2018, so Gunn saw no reason not to include his cameo. The film was released in May and became a box office hit, grossing $840 million.
