Google Officially Releases Neighborhood Sharing App for Windows 11 and Windows 10

On July 19, 2023, Google officially announced the availability of the new Nearby Share app for Windows 11 and Windows 10.

Neighborhood Sharing makes it easy to share files between smartphones, tablets, Chromebooks, and more. The desktop version of the app for Windows has been in beta testing since March 2023 and is now officially available.

According to Google, more than 1.7 million users have installed the beta, and there have been over 50 million file transfers between PCs and Android devices since launch.

The first stable version received several improvements. Added an estimate of the file transfer completion time to give you an idea of how quickly large files and folders will be transferred. Also, notifications on devices now show a preview of the image to make sure that the correct file is transferred.

    The Google blog says:

To make sharing between Android devices and PCs even easier, we’re working with partners like HP to enable the Nearby Share app on select Windows PCs like the HP Dragonfly Pro. We will continue to work on Nearby Share for Windows, adding new features and listening to your feedback.

Wi-Fi and Bluetooth must be enabled on your computer to use Nearby Share. After setting up the functionality, you can drag and drop files into the application or use the context menu option Send via Environment Exchange. The devices between which files are being transferred must be within 5 meters of each other.

As a reminder, Samsung’s Quick Share feature, which was previously only available for Galaxy laptops, received support for all Windows 10 and 11 laptops in early July. Similar to Google Nearby Share, the Samsung Quick Share app makes it easy and fast to transfer files between Samsung Android devices and Windows PCs.

Microsoft, for its part, offers a built-in Link to Phone app for Windows 11 and Windows 10 users to sync Windows PCs and Android devices. All its benefits are maximized when used with Samsung devices, including Calling, running Android applications and sharing clipboard with Windows PC.
