FFXIV Fan Video Pays Tribute to Lord of the Rings Meme Creator

A new FFXIV fan video pays homage to one of Square Enix’s most iconic and beloved Lord of the Rings MMORPG memes after the creator of the meme passed away in March. If you’ve been online in the mid-2000s, you’re almost certainly familiar with Erwin Beckveld’s “They’re taking the Hobbits to Isengard” meme – first uploaded as a video to the Albino Blacksheep website in August 2005.

The original video is a remix of several scenes from The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers 2 into an incredibly catchy dance anthem. As the title suggests, Orlando Bloom’s character Legolas is at the center of the plot, yelling, “They’re taking the hobbits to Isengard!” The two-minute video gained immense popularity online, reaching the point where LOTR director Peter Jackson uploaded the video to his Facebook page, with Bloom singing along to the track.

Now Final Fantasy XIV players have created their own in-game version, reimagining it as “They are taking lalas to Harlemald”. The video is a complete reimagining of the song and its video, made in a multiplayer game. As you might have guessed, the hobbits have been replaced with Lalafel, and Isengard with the imperial home of Harlemald.

Unfortunately, in March 2022, it became known that the original creator of the meme, Beckveld, passed away at the age of 52 after battling lung cancer. Along with his most famous work, he has also created many remixes of classic Commodore 64 themes. So it’s nice to see his legacy still bringing joy to people on the internet seventeen years later.
