Today, Colossal Order and Paradox Entertainment released a new video about the upcoming city builder Cities: Skylines 2, with a focus on zoning. This is a deeper dive with more developer commentary on topics shown in another video earlier this week.
We will look at zoning tools that allow you to draw either a whole block or a square. You can also get as detailed as you want by coloring the zones cell by cell. Thankfully, the ability to delete a zone is no longer in a separate tool, but simply tied to a right-click.
The video also provides a deeper look into North American and European styles that go beyond buildings. They also include company vehicles, road markings and roadside poles.
Density now includes a “medium” option on top, as well as high and low. This includes mixed housing with shops downstairs and low rent housing for students, young adults and singles. Mixed housing is also part of low-rise commercial areas.
Industrial zoning includes manufacturing plants and warehouses. Interestingly, the zoning requirement calculation (which was very flawed in the original game) has been improved.
Companies working on similar products will receive a specialization bonus if they are located in close proximity to each other, which will increase efficiency and profit. Another system that has been overhauled is the land value system.
Cities: Skylines 2 releases October 24, 2023 for PC, Xbox Series X|S and PS5. It will also be available on Xbox Game Pass on the first day.
