Amazon scrapped the idea of a series about young Aragorn

Amazon has confirmed that prior to the creation of The Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power, the company had abandoned the idea of creating a series centered on the young Aragorn, the character played by Viggo Mortensen in the Lord of the Rings films.

This information was revealed by the co-producer of “Ring of Power” JD Payne. He also said that the company has canceled several other television projects in Middle-earth.

When we first applied, we were told, When we first started working, we were told that dozens of people came to Amazon – and each with their own proposals. Amazon bought the rights to the trilogy and The Hobbit. They said that the field is open: you can tell any story within the framework of this material. So there were people who suggested a series about young Aragorn, or a Gimli spin-off, or other things.

Payne went on to explain how he and colleague Patrick McKay came up with the design for what would eventually become The Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power.

“They wanted to do something worthy of Tolkien,” he said in an interview. “And when we thought about it and looked at the material, we saw all the different types of stories: the story of the Second Age, then the Dark Lord Sauron, the fall of Numenor, and the fight against Sauron at Mount Doom. The arc of the main events of the Second Age seemed to me an incredible, untold story” .
